Segundo a National Science Fundation (Março de 2006), dois estudos científicos relacionam directamente o degelo no Árctico com o degelo no continente Antárctico ocorrido há milhares de anos atrás.

O mesmo documento reconhece que caso este fenómeno se verificasse actualmente, o degelo seria potenciado pelo efeito de estufa e o aumento médio da temperatura global. Assim, o degelo no Árctico não seria compensado com um aumento da superfície de gelo no Antárctico (ao contrário da teoria defendida por alguns).

Recorde-se que a N.S.F. é uma agência governamental norte-americana.

“These studies are the first to link Arctic and Antarctic melting in the last interglacial period… the rise in sea levels produced by Arctic warming and melting could have helped destabilize ice shelves at the edge of the Antarctic ice sheet and led to their collapse. If such a process occurred today, it would be accelerated by global-scale greenhouse-induced warming year round, Overpeck says. In the Arctic, melting would likely be hastened by pollution that darkens snow and enables it to absorb more sunlight.”
